How We Rate Casinos
At northhavenlodge.com, our 2026 review methodology is designed to give Canadian readers consistent, evidence-based assessments of online casinos and sports betting apps that offer casino games. We examine operator documentation, verify regulatory records, and test available features firsthand where lawful and practical. When direct testing is not possible, we distinguish documented facts from unverified operator claims.
Each category receives a score from 1 to 10 and a fixed weighting. Commercial relationships do not determine our scores, and a casino cannot compensate for weak licensing or player protection by offering a large bonus.
Licensing & Regulation
Weighting: 25%. Licensing is our most important criterion because it establishes who operates the casino, which rules apply, and what oversight or complaint routes may be available.
- We verify the operator, licence number, licence status, and approved domains against the relevant regulator’s public register.
- We assess licences from authorities such as the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), and Curaçao according to their actual scope and requirements.
- An MGA, UKGC, or Curaçao licence is not treated as authorization to operate locally in Canada. We separately assess applicable Canadian and provincial requirements, including Ontario’s AGCO registration and iGaming Ontario framework where relevant.
- We check company ownership, terms governing Canadian players, game-fairness certifications, data security, and the availability of meaningful dispute-resolution procedures.
If ownership or licensing cannot be verified, we may withhold a score and will not present the operator as recommended.
Game Selection & Software Providers
Weighting: 20%. We evaluate the quality, variety, and reliability of the casino catalogue rather than relying on the advertised number of games alone.
- Slots: variety of themes and mechanics, jackpots, volatility information, return-to-player disclosures where available, and reputable software providers.
- Live casino: blackjack, roulette, baccarat, game shows, table limits, streaming quality, dealer availability, and the studios supplying the games.
- Table games: RNG-based classics, video poker, specialty games, rule variations, and accessible betting limits.
- We also consider search and filtering tools, loading performance, mobile availability, and whether the Canadian catalogue differs materially from the operator’s international offering.
For sports betting apps with an integrated casino, we assess the casino vertical separately; sportsbook features do not inflate this score.
Bonus Terms & Wagering Requirements
Weighting: 18%. A bonus is judged by its complete terms and conditions, not its headline amount. We examine welcome offers, ongoing promotions, free spins, and loyalty rewards where applicable.
- We calculate the practical rollover burden, including whether wagering applies to the bonus alone or to both the deposit and bonus.
- We review game-weighting rules, excluded games, maximum bets, expiry periods, withdrawal restrictions, and maximum cashout limits.
- We check whether terms are easy to find, written clearly, and consistent across promotional pages and the general T&Cs.
- We consider whether players can decline a bonus and whether withdrawing real-money funds triggers unusual penalties.
Lower, transparent wagering requirements generally score better than large offers with restrictive rollover, short deadlines, or low cashout caps.
Payment Methods & Withdrawal Speed
Weighting: 15%. We assess the full payment journey for Canadian users, including account verification, deposits, withdrawals, fees, and limits.
- We review support for CAD and relevant options such as Interac, e-wallets, bank transfers, cards, and cryptocurrency where offered.
- We distinguish the casino’s internal approval time from the payment provider’s processing time and check whether advertised withdrawal speeds are realistic.
- We examine KYC requirements, minimum and maximum transactions, weekend processing, withdrawal-method restrictions, and any fees charged by the operator.
- For crypto payments, we also consider supported networks, confirmation requirements, address accuracy, and the additional risks created by price volatility and transaction irreversibility.
Fast withdrawals receive credit only when they are consistent and transparent; we do not treat an advertised “instant” claim as a guarantee.
Customer Support
Weighting: 10%. We test how easily players can obtain accurate help, particularly for payments, account verification, bonus disputes, and responsible gaming requests.
- We check whether 24/7 live chat is genuinely available and whether users reach a knowledgeable agent rather than only an automated bot.
- We assess email responsiveness, help-centre quality, complaint escalation, and the clarity of answers at different times of day.
- We award more credit for specific, consistent responses than for scripted replies that simply repeat promotional terms.
Mobile Experience
Weighting: 7%. We evaluate casinos and sports betting apps on current iOS and Android devices, using both dedicated apps and mobile browsers where available.
- We test responsive design, navigation, stability, loading times, game performance, and the readability of important terms.
- We check whether mobile users can complete registration, verification, deposits, withdrawals, and support requests without switching to desktop.
- Dedicated apps are assessed on update history, official-store availability, permissions, security features, and feature parity.
A well-designed responsive website can score highly without a dedicated app; an app is not automatically an advantage.
Responsible Gaming Tools
Weighting: 5%. Responsible gaming is also a fundamental eligibility consideration, not merely a source of extra points. We check whether tools are accessible, effective, and easy to activate without pressure to continue playing.
- We look for deposit, loss, wager, and session limits, together with reality checks and clear account-history access.
- We test or document cooling-off periods, time-outs, self-exclusion, account closure, and the process for reversing or reducing limits.
- We consider links to provincial self-exclusion programs and Canadian support services where applicable.
- We penalize operators that hide these controls, make exclusion unnecessarily difficult, or combine them with aggressive promotional messaging.
Our Rating Scale
We multiply each category’s 1–10 score by its weighting, add the results, and round the weighted total to one decimal place. Reviews are rechecked when material changes occur, such as a licence update, new withdrawal policy, or revised bonus terms.
- 9.0–10.0 — Outstanding: Exceptional performance across nearly every category, with no material player-protection concerns. A perfect 10 is rare.
- 8.0–8.9 — Excellent: Strong overall quality with only minor, clearly disclosed shortcomings.
- 7.0–7.9 — Good: A generally reliable option, though some terms, features, or service areas need improvement.
- 6.0–6.9 — Mixed: Usable but carrying significant reservations that readers should review carefully.
- 5.0–5.9 — Weak: Below-average value or transparency, with substantial drawbacks.
- 1.0–4.9 — Poor: Serious deficiencies; these operators are not recommended.
Scores are comparative editorial assessments, not guarantees of safety, payout times, or individual outcomes. We may decline to score or recommend an operator when licensing, ownership, payment practices, or responsible gaming safeguards raise serious concerns.
